It reminded me of my Grandmothers stories. She would have been in her mid 90s. She passed away 4 years ago.
I remember her telling us back when you bought a car the car salesman would come to your home and live with you for a week, teaching you how to drive and the driving laws. You didn't have to get a license so no one knew what to do when you came to an intersection etc, so the salesman would teach you the etiquette of driving. Can you imagine before there were laws how one salesman might interpret something different than another salesman. My great Grandparents (my Grandmother's parents) were well to do and she was an only child (all of her siblings had died-most as babies or toddlers, she had one brother that lived to man hood, was engaged but was killed in a car accident). Her parents didn't want to learn how to drive and told the salesman to teach her to drive and she could drive them around. She was only 12, I believe, when she learned to drive.
Another interesting story--she had so many. She got married and had 3 children, ended up one of those few single gals but she didn't give in. She became the President of the Union at the place she worked. Years later she remarried and my Dad, the youngest was a teenager. Her new husband had taken a job in a different state and she was going to be giving up her job. The owners of Magnavox came in town to meet with her, trying to convince her to stay. They told her if she left they would close the plant down because she was the reason the plant was what it was. She followed her husband and sure enough they closed it down, it wasn't an idle threat. That really says so much about her-this was in the day when woman were just getting the right to vote and men dominated the work place. I sure do miss her. She always made Christmas fun.
